Week 3 Update: Soggy but Resilient

Hallo Füsters!

Quick game update to close out Week 2 of what is unquestionably the coldest and rainiest start to any Winterfüste event since the Winter of 1936, when Eleanor Roosevelt (playing as Dumbo Octopus) completely obliterated the second place finisher Spencer Tracy (playing as Braunbär) in a plank-off for the ages. Good news, rain is supposed to stop tomorrow and we should have at least a week and a half of dry weather on the NorCal Spielbrett (you SoCal players just keep doing what you’re doing and don’t mind us up here, we’re soggy and water logged and a little grumpy).

Here goes the update:

  • Two new bonuses this week, both due by the end of Periode I, which just happens to be next Sunday, Jan. 22nd. Furthermore, all bonuses released in Periode 1 are due complete by that same date. The only bonuses that will carry forward into Periode II (starting Jan. 23rd) are the Snow Angel and the Paid Event. EVERYTHING ELSE IS DUE BY NEXT SUNDAY!

  • To help you keep track of the bonus game play, GG is releasing a Periode I tracking sheet (yes, yes, better late then never) followed next weekend by a Periode II tracking sheet etc. Hope that helps.

  • This weeks big event: double Fastentag days with 24 hour fasts hitting Tuesday AND Thursday. Just to you make sure you feel gross and hangry more than once this week!

  • Hopefully you’ve been doing your homework cause you’ve got your first Midterm coming up next weekend. More details at the end of the week!

That’s it (see, told you it’d be short). Keep doing what your’e doing, Füsters. GG is incredibly impressed by how many players have been out in the rain these last two weeks, knocking out the exercise and bonuses! Really amazing dedication to the game and most importantly to yourselves. 7 more weeks to go!

GG

WEEK 2 UPDATE: THE PRESSURE BEGINS

Hallo Füsters and willkommen to Week 2!

Hopefully everyone enjoyed Week 1 (soggy and cold as it was for most of us). Each Sunday night GG will provide a game update covering what’s coming for the next seven days, plus reflections on the past week. He’ll also try to address any FAQ’s or issues that popped up during game play.

So here goes:

  • First (and this wasn’t an issue, GG’s just being pro-active here), please remember that GG is only one person and the Füste is a literal labor of love. He has a regular full time job just like most of you and tries to have some semblance of a life, even during Winterfüste. This means that his communication back to you can often be sporadic. You’ll usually get a good response at the beginning of the day or the end of the day but that middle part can be a bit dicey. He does try to monitor the text feed for actual questions in case a Füster needs clarification or direction that same day but if it’s an acknowledgement of a workout or bonus, you’ll probably hear back early or later . . . thanks for your understanding.

  • Skwad Kombat seems to moving right along without any significant issues. Remember, there are 12 Skwads and as a result there will be 12 Füsters who win the +3p Lokale Legende bonus at the end of Periode II. That could be enough to take the whole game so you might want to pay attention to what your Skwad mates are doing! You need to win this first battle if you’re going to win the war!

  • If you haven’t noticed yet, GG is moving away from Twitter and starting to focus more on Instagram. Main reason being that the registration audit showed that a very high percentage of Füsters have an IG account while only a mid range number have a Twitter account. So, makes sense to go where the Füsters are . . . That being said, GG’s still figuring out the best way to use IG to it’s full effect. As with everything with the Füste, your patience is greatly appreciated.

  • There’s been some confusion around the new Periode based bonus system so GG did some work on the bonus page (go HERE) and he hopes the edits will clear things up. Basically, there are two bonuses that you have to (or can) complete by the end of each week. The first is the “lucky friend gift”. Each week you can give only one gift to one friend. If you miss the opportunity for that specific week, you can’t make it up. The second is the Scavenger Hunt bonus. This one’s a little different in that you have to complete each week to be able to get the clue for the next week. Earn this bonus for all nine weeks and you earn the +3p completion bonus. Other than those two, all other bonuses either have to be completed by the end of each Periode (the first game period, Periode I, ends on Jan. 22nd) or they have some other time parameter that’s clearly spelled out on the bonus page.

  • Speaking of bonuses, two new Periode I bonuses have been added to the bonus page (link above in blue) so go check em out. And several players have asked about the bonus tracking sheet that GG put out last year. As soon as he can find some spare time, GG will put this together for the Füsters. Possibly early this coming week.

  • Don’t forget to do your homework as you’re only two weeks out from your first Mid-Term (and associated bonus). And no, GG will not accept the excuse that a long dog ate your home work.

  • And please don’t forget, this week’s big event is the first Fastentag of Winterfüste. Starting Wednesday at midnight, you’ll need to complete a full 24 hour, clear liquid-only fast if you want to earn the +1p bonus and be eligible for the full completion bonus in a couple weeks. You’ll report off on this week’s Fastentag on Thursday morning, Jan. 12th.

That’s it for now. Looks like those of us playing in NorCal are in for another wet and wild week of game play. GG can’t remember the last time a Füste event had torrential rain for days plus lightening and thunder and all that good stuff. Makes you with for the warm days and nights of Sömmer Kamp, no?

Have a great Week 2 and as always, may the Füste be with you!
GG

WILLKOMMEN TO THE STARTENFÜSTE!

Morning Füsters and welcome to Day 1 of WF23!

GG will keep this short as he knows you’ve been hammered with info over the last 48 hours.

  • Did you send you weigh-in pic yet and complete you Startenfüste Assessment (go here)?

  • First report on the DRT is due tomorrow by noon! You will be reporting for today’s activities.

  • Polarfüsten Allowance (Polar Plunge) is live from now until Wednesday at midnight. No diving and get in and get out before hypothermia sets in! Send video proof to GG to score your +3p bonus!

  • Two other bonuses are time limited this week: Lucky Friend Gift 1 and Scavenger Hunt 1 are both live through Sunday at midnight, then they drop off the game board and you won’t be able to play them so knock ‘em out!

  • Speaking of the Scavenger Hunt . . . here’s Week 1’s item: find a statue in the public space and take a selfie. For those in the greater Santa Rosa area, a Peanuts sculpture is preferred. The rest of you, find something interesting with local flavor!

  • No fasting this week, thank Gott.

  • Get your homework done.

That’s it. Have a great Day 1 and leave your mouth hole alone!
GG

And So We Begin Again . . .

HALLO, FÜSTERS AND WILLKOMMEN TO WINTERFÜSTE 23!

This year will be the 224th anniversary of the modern expression of Herr Doktor Mediziner Schneebärtchen’s brilliant device to combat your own internal demons and (for a lack of a better way to say it), defeat your meat. As most of you already know, this game is all about denying oneself that which makes us slow and sick and overly tired, that which makes us plump and soft and heavy in the haunches. By adding a small dose of accountability to your life (a polite way of saying dein Hintern belongs to GG for the next 9 weeks), you are going to see an amazing change to not only your waist line but also your brain cage. The Füste has the ability to break you down to your most basic self, that keening little bastard that keeps you pacing in front of the ice box, the alcohol cabinet, the soft couch and it’s ever present partner in crime, the picture screen. Well, for the next almost two and half months, you’re voluntarily going to put your boot on the throat of that weakness and together we’re going to grind out a level of self improvement that you’ve rarely attempted as an adult. GG would like to commend you on your fortitude of spirit in taking on this incredible challenge and wishes you the best of luck on your journey to the new version of yourself waiting just around the corner on March 4th!

BUT ENOUGH OF THIS SELF -SUCKLING, LET’S GET IT ON!

Right out the gate, let’s talk about what’s different in this year’s game:

  • There are now three distinct Periode’s in the game, creating defined divisions in calendar game play. Each Periode lasts three weeks (e.g. Periode I begins on Jan. 2, the Startenfüste, and goes to Jan. 22nd). Each Periode offers different bonus opportunities and each has different Schmerzenfüste (exercise) parameters. Probably most important here, most bonuses that are released in a Periode are only good to the end of that Periode (unlike past Füstes where you had all game to get any and all of the bonuses done). Make sure to review the Rule Book (go here) and the Bonus page (go here) to fully understand the implications of this change!

  • There’s a big change to Schmerzenfüste (exercize) this year and it’s a direct response to a lot of feedback GG has received around workouts. When we get to Doppelt and Trippelt workouts, you will only be able to complete four a week (as opposed to having to do a Trippelt every day in the back third of the game). GG heard loud and clear that 7 day a week Doppelt and Trippelts was a bit of a bridge too far for many players so we’ll try this out and see how it goes.

  • One significant game addition in relation to the new Periode divisions is that of Skwad Kombat. This is a MAJOR change so pay attention here. Every Füster will be assigned to a Skwad. But instead of working cooperatively with your Skwad, this Füste you’ll be directly competing with them in a open knife fight for the Lokale Legende +3p bonus. Only one Füster out of each Skwad will be awarded this bonus at the end of the first two game Periodes (at the 6 week mark). Out play your Skwad mates for 6 weeks and if you have the most punkte on Feb. 12th, you’ll get the bonus and big bump towards joining the Pantheon of the Gottähnfüste!

  • There is a big change to one legacy bonus : the Geschirrspuülerfüste Allowance. This is the one where you break a plate on your friend’s doorstep to wish them good luck in the new year (or you gift them fruit or something if you’re a flatwareapologist). This Füste you will be able to visit 9 friends to deliver this lucky gift BUT you can only deliver one gift per week AND if you miss a week you cannot go back and recover that opportunity. Basically, if you don’t drop off your Week 1 “Lucky Friend” gift/bonus during the first week of game play, you’ll lose that +1p bonus opportunity for good. (and so on over the 9 weeks of the game). This will all be reflected in the Daily Reporting Tool bonus drop downs so you won’t be able to mess it up . . .

  • There is also a new bonus that follows these exact week over week rules: the Schnitzeljagd Allowance. Some old school Füsters will remember the one day scavenger hunts that we used to do during Füste events. Well, GG’s taken that concept and blown it out for the length of the game. Make sure to review the bonus page on the website to get all the details.

  • There is another new bonus called the Halten Und Fallen Allowance. Make sure to monitor your phone during the day because when you get tapped for this bonus, you will only have 15 minutes to complete it and send proof back to GG, regardless of what you’re doing or where you are . . .

  • Homework has a different flavor this Füste as well. By going here, you can review the daily requirements for Periode 1. Instead of weekend audits though, you’re going to have to pass a Mid-Term at the end of each of the first two game Periodes and Final Exam at the end of Periode III. You’re going to have to really ramp up the self discipline and get your homework done every day if you want to win the game this year!

  • Fasting is of course back because GG knows how much you love being hangry (but he knows you also love looking good naked so it’s a fair trade really)! This year there will be six 24 hour Fastentag events (Week 4 of the game is now lovingly known as the Woche des hungrigen Geistes or the “Week of Hungry Ghosts” so, yeah, enjoy that!).

  • Meatless Monday’s, gone. You can still choose to not eat meat on Mondays but like the man says in the song, you don’t have to go home but you can’t stay here. So, do with that what you will.

  • Some very minor changes have been made to the Schmerzenfüste parameters (again, review the Rule Book). Just double check that you know what you need to earn your Singelt (single) workout punkte during Periode I.

  • No major changes in how your report to GG but the Daily Reporting Tool has been overhauled and should provide a much improved experience for both the players and the game manager.

COUPLE MORE THINGS TO REMEMBER

  • If you haven’t already, please head over here to sign your game play liability waiver. Not sexy but GG doesn’t need you taking his double wide just because you made a bad decision to dive head first into a shallow pond, right?

  • Don’t forget to complete your Startenfüste Assessment tomorrow. You’ll need to weigh-in and send the dreaded wieght scale pic to GG via text (“dreaded” because many of you seem to have a much higher tolerance for coyote paws than GG does and you subsequently refuse to wear socks in your pics . . . yes, part of your game fee is used to pay for GG’s psychiatric well being and recovery). You also need to go here and fill out the actual Startenfüste Assessment sheet.

  • As always, we begin the game with the Polarfüsten Allowance (Polar Plunge). Requirements are listed on the bonus page but most important to remember is that you have only 72 hours to complete this bonus! After Wednesday, Jan. 4th, it will drop off the DRT and you won’t be able to report it again so get out there and get hypothermic!

  • Remember, you may only score one bonus a day unless otherwise directed by GG. And you cannot complete multiple bonuses in a single day and then report them on different days to GG (basically stacking the deck). Don’t get caught trying to run a game on GG here. He has eyes everywhere!

  • Also remember that some bonuses will still be available the full length of the game, namely the Snow Angel bonus and back this year (finally), the Paid Event bonus. Review the Bonus page for more.

  • For those players who refuse to assimilate to the Apple shaped borg and continue to pointlessly use something other than an iPhone, please remember to download the WhatsApp app as this is the best way for you to send GG your pic and video proofs. Just search for “Griswalde Grolar” on the app and send over a friendly hallo text. Do this for the continued health and wellbeing of your game manager. Danke.

Alright, Füsters, that’s enough for now. You’ve got some work to do (mainly review the Rule Book and Bonus Page) to get ready for the Startenfüste. Maybe go clean out your pantry and fridge of all sugar filled treats and put that lock back on the liquor cabinet cause it’s going to be a long 9 weeks and you might as well get started now!

Finally, GG is both excited and honored that you have chosen to spend time with him this Winter. He’s looking forward to seeing all the amazing things you’re going to accomplish over the next 9 weeks and he hopes that you’ll thoroughly enjoy both his company and you’re time on the Spielbrett!

And as always, may the Füste be with you!
Griswalde Grolar (GG)

Week 8 . . . The Finish Line

Füsters . . .

First off, let GG start by apologizing for the last two weeks. He was part of a 15 day memorial event that traveled through 18 states and pretty much got his butt kicked on a daily basis leaving little time to focus on anything but where we were headed the next day . . . This event wasn’t on GG’s radar when he first set up and launched Sömmer Kamp and it’s an open question as to whether he would have held it or not had he’d known the time commitment and impact. Having said that, GG was very happy to see the Füsters continue the game independent of GG’s issues and report daily for your own benefit (which is the whole point of the Füste). So amazing job for those of you who’ll make it to the end this year!

Updates:

  • Final week bonus is posted to the website and of course it’s your Drachen! Go here for the details.

  • School’s out for Sömmer and that means no more homework! You’re done for this year with the push-ups and sit-ups and planks and all the rest! Great work here, everyone.

  • Don’t forget that all bonuses posted on the website are still live meaning you can still earn the points by knocking them out this week. Don’t leave extra punkte on the table!

Remember the game goes till 5pm on this Saturday night . . . Activity on Saturday will be due by that 5pm deadline so make sure you set an alarm or something to remind yourself. Drachen’s can be slain right up to the last minute of the last day. GG will put out a final update at the end of the week. Other than that, have a great Week 8 and finish strong!

Danke

GG

Week 6 - Down hill from here . . .

Füsters . . .

Three weeks to go in Sömmer Kamp and the field has been reduced by almost a third. Sömmer Kamp’s early retirement (and ghosting) rate far exceeds that of Winterfüste every year . . . really an interesting annual occurrence. But this matter’s not to you, oh faithful Füster, because you’re in it for the long (dog) haul, the whole enchilada, all the way to the finish line and then some!

Updates:

  • It came way faster than GG remembers it but apparently we start TRIPPELT workouts tomorrow (July 11th)! Didn’t see that one coming! Get out there and knock out those big workouts (go here if you can’t remember what a Trippelt looks like).

  • Also, this week’s bonus is a HUGE commitment to the concept of mental endurance and pain (and yes, GG got a little twisted on this one given it’s such a huge ask for such a little punkte . . . but that might just be built into the game design, right? 🤔)

  • Homework’s updated but you knew that already.

Not much else to say other than GG is on the road for the next two weeks (yep, 14 damn days) in support of his alter ego’s FT job so be patient if you don’t hear back real quick. But maybe keep an eye on STRAVA or Twitter to see if you can figure out where in the world GG is . . .

That’s it for now. Almost there. Hope you’re really giving it to that flank meat!

GG

Week 4

Füsters:

Real quick update this week . . . the fasts are behind us (how’d you do? GG had a rough go of it this time 🤢) and the Cheat Day is right around the corner (new and improved this year with FIREWORKS!) so that means we’re almost half way through Sömmer Kamp. GG hopes you’re seeing some results by now but if not, no worried cause it’s time for . . .

  • Doppelt Workouts! Starting tomorrow (June 27th) and available daily through the end of the game, a Doppelt (i.e. double) workout is worth +2p and is accomplished either by completing a defined Doppelt workout (go here to review) or by completing two separate Singelts in one day. Good luck!

  • Last week GG asked you to pay a little more attention to the dates during your daily reporting and you guys killed it! GG didn’t have to fix a single report during Week 3! Thank you for your attention to detail 👍

  • You guys are also doing great with the weekend homework audits so keep that up to collect those +3p bonuses!

  • Some great Sömmer time activity were sent over to GG to earn your free drink point. GG’s seen some great water balloon ambushes, water slide fun, slip and slides, Füsters playing in sprinklers and going out for Sömmer picnics. Excellent work and hope you enjoyed the free drink.

  • New bonus for this week has been posted and homework has been updated.

  • And yes, don’t forget the 4th of July (where we celebrate our “freedom”, unless you’re a woman with working uterus then we just pretend . . . ) is your Cheat Day this year so prepare yourself to feel really gross next Monday!

That’s it for now. Thanks for being here and GG hopes you’re having a good Sömmer Kamp experience!

GG

On to Week 3!

Evening Füsters! GG hopes you had a great weekend and wishes a happy Father’s Day to all the fathers out there, as well as anyone who identifies as a father or is a father by proxy. Important work you do everyday!

Here’s your update:

  • Don’t forget that GG screwed up the DRT again (because of course he did) and you now have to report your weekend audit on Tuesday. That’s when the check box will magically appear. So make sure you check the box and get that punkte!

  • While we’re on the topic of reporting, please double check that you’re using the correct date when you’re reporting. It’s not a huge deal, but GG is having to go in and correct a number of reports each day due to the wrong date. It looks like sometimes you guys fat finger the keyboard and end up reporting for a date one week in advance. Again, not earth shattering, just letting you know.

  • This week’s bonus is the classic Mitternachtsonne IBA. GG has altered the start and end times a bit and you can now do it between 10pm and 4am the next day. And remember that you can use it for your exercise point on whichever day you started the activity on . . .

  • Great work on the howework audits. GG saw some excellent form with the squats and wall holds. You guys are taking the homework seriously which is great to see! And the homework parameters have been updated for Week 3 so check that homework page for more info . . .

  • Don’t forget this week is the dreaded 48 hour fast, Wednesday and Thursday. If you get it done and you did the other two, you can report the +6p Fasting bonus on the DRT on Friday!

  • Also this week we get to experience the Sömmer Solstice together on Tuesday. Longest day of the year and after that the days get slightly shorter (seems counter intuitive as we go into true Sömmer, no?). Anyways, GG will most likely have a Blitz Bonus waiting for you on this special day so keep your peels eyed and we’ll see what happens!

That’s it for now. Hope you guys are having a good time at Kamp so far and keep up the good work this week!

GG

Sömmer Kamp Week 2 Update

Evening Füsters!

Week 1 has come to a close and we had a good, solid week of participation from everyone in the game. The group did excellent work in helping to maintain GG’s mental health by reporting accurately and early every day. Thanks for that!

Now for a quick update:

  • Homework parameters have increased so go check those on the homework page. Make sure you’re doing your sets each day because GG can guarantee that you won’t be able to successfully complete the last couple of weekend audits if you’re not putting the time in. One other thing of note, the push-up audit this weekend showed that a lot of folks haven’t reviewed the form videos on the homework page because there was entirely too much water-spidering going on. So go check out the videos and make sure you’re form is solid.

  • Under the Bonus drop down you’ll see “ASSESSMENT (1)” right at the top of the list. Please do not report this bonus. It’s not for the Startenfüste Assessment or anything else that’s been released. Sorry for any confusion there.

  • Trying something a little different with this week’s bonuses . . . you can combine them as a single event. For example, simply go for a hike at a park that’s out of your county and you can score both on the same day (thereby violating the sanctity of the “only one bonus per day” rule!) Just report one as the first bonus and the second as, uh, the second. That should be pretty simple.

Shockingly, not much else to say tonight so we’ll keep it short and sweet.

Have a great second week of Sömmer Kamp and keep up the good work!

Griswalde Grolar

WILLKOMMEN BACK TO THE FÜSTE!

Evening, Füsters!

GG’s very pleased to have you all back on the Spielbrett and ready to once again take up arms in the never ending battle for the supremacy over our collective muffin tops! Flank meat never rests and while you’ve been enjoying your Spring it’s been plotting against you and your pancreas. Well, this stops now as we draw a line in the sand and use the long days of Sömmer to our advantage! Let it be known that our flank meats days are once again numbered as we come together to defeat that meat!

Here’s the tea on Sömmer Kamp:

  • Don’t forget to complete your Startenfüste Assessment by going here. This is where you’ll record your Day 1 weigh-in (still send GG that pic of your scale for accountability . . . and please, for the love of all that is holy, unless you are literally a foot model, throw some socks on those bad boys and save GG the discomfort of knowing your horrible secrets). Please get the full assessment done by mid-week at the latest.

  • Also don’t forget to sign your liability waiver by going here. GG likes to live lawyer free.

  • Some of the Schmerzenfüste (exercise) parameters have been slightly tweeked (mostly for the Doppelt and Trippelts) so please review to make sure you’ve got the right goals set for yourself.

  • We don’t have frozen lakes to jump into to start Sömmer Kamp but we do have buckets of ice and water. Go here for your Week 1 bonuses.

  • While we’re on the topic, bonuses for Sömmer Kamp are very different than you may be used to from other recent Füste events. There will only be one pre-scheduled standard bonus available per week. There may still be the occasional “Blitz Bonus” that pops up for one single day but for the most part your bonus opportunities will be intentionally limited.

  • While we’re on the topic of bonuses, you’ll note that STRAVA Challenge Bonuses are not included during Sömmer Kamp. Again, GG’s looking for you to concentrate on the daily grind and creating good, healthy, realistic habits (although GG’s not ruling out that a STRAVA Challenge might play a part in one of the weekly bonuses down the road).

  • And one more thing about bonuses . . . last Winterfüste we ran into a problem. It’s a standing rule that you can only complete one bonus per day. But there are certain circumstances where you might have to REPORT a second bonus and that wasn’t something the Daily Reporting Tool could handle. Well, GG’s got that fixed so if you run across this situation, you’ll be able to report the second bonus without difficulty (by choosing “second bonus” on the DRT; intuitive, no?).

  • Homework is still a thing and GG is going to greatly beef up this requirement. The KoG is gone and rebranded as your Weekly Homework Audit, still due each weekend by Sunday at 5pm. New to this Füste is a tweak to the Daily Reporting Tool wherein you will not be able to report your homework audit on any day except Monday (the check box will literally only appear on Mondays). Go here to review Week 1’s homework assignment. Remember, there are no daily points associated with completing your homework but you need to do it so that you can successfully complete the end of the week audit and earn your +3p bonus.

  • Fasting will of course return during the first half of the game. In fact, the first fast is this Wednesday (June 8th), clear liquids only from sun-up to sun-down. And just like the homework audit, the fasting checkbox will only appear on your DRT the day after a scheduled fast (the +6p Fasting bonus you’ll see in the bonus drop down list is only for when you complete all three fasting events successfully).

  • There are no rest days during Sömmer Kamp (except for the Cheat Day which conveniently falls on the 4th of July this year) so just ignore that the DRT still mentions that under the exercise drop down. It wouldn’t be a Füste event if GG didn’t miss some damn thing during the build out.

  • If you’re one of those non-iPhone weirdos, let GG save us both from the pain and suffering your poor choices will cause us. Download WhatsApp and friend Griswalde Grolar. This is the only way you’ll be able to effectively send GG the video proof that many activities require.

  • One major change that GG has made to the game addresses the likelihood of a tie on the final day. We’ve seen this now a couple of times and while GG applauds any Füster who accomplishes the near impossibility of a Perfect Game (earning all possible points, something that has now become the trademark of the Bestenfüste), he had found it necessary to create a tie break challenge so that there can truly be only one Bestenfüste when the bell rings on July 30th. Not going to give you full visibility yet but let’s just say you’re going to want to concentrate on doing your homework with mighty diligence if you think you’re going to be the best as Kamp.

Alright, that’s enough for now. One pro tip: try very hard not to drop any easy points in the first two weeks of the game. You never know when the urge to Bestenfüste will hit you and it’s a real bummer if you kill your changes early on for no good reason. So come out swinging tomorrow and don’t look back (unless you’re planning on going that way). GG’s looking forward to playing along with you and wishes you great success on the Spielbrett!

May the Füste be with you over the next 8 weeks!

Griswalde G
