first and foremost, there is foodenfüste . . .
Like an animal in hibernation for the Winter, you must slow your intake. For each day that you deny yourself, you will earn +1 punkte.
Some points of clarity and answers to common questions:
Sugar . . . like heroin for your flank meat. In today’s industrialized society, sugar is added to almost everything you stick in your mouth hole. But for the nine weeks of Winterfüste, you will deny yourself this false pleasure and focus on natural foods like fruits and vegetables and lean meats. Avoid “flavored” or “sweetened” items and stay away from candy, baked goods and soda. If it comes packaged, check the Nutrition Facts on the label. If "sugar" is listed as an ingredient then the item is a hard pass. But there is an exception here: naturally occurring sugars are okay. For example, plain, unflavored yoghurt has a couple grams of sugar. This sugar wasn't added to the product and therefore it is acceptable to consume. You will see this sugar listed in the Nutrition Facts but not in the ingredients. But even your “natural” sugar intake should be limited: no more than 25 grams/day for women or 35 grams/day for men (for reference, a single can of Coca-Cola has 39 grams of sugar).
Processed foods . . . the bane of modern society. Does it come in a package, box or wrapper? Check the ingredients list. More than three ingredients and it’s a hard pass. Keep it out of your mouth hole. Also, any and all “fast” foods are considered processed so they are unquestionably off limits.
General carbohydrates . . . organic chemistry’s way of sticking it to you, literally. To earn your daily Foodenpunkte, you must keep carb intake to less than 20% of your daily total calorie consumption. You should target a diet of 40% protein, 40% fat and 20% carbs. And these carbs should only be healthy, non-processed carbs. How will you know if it's okay to eat? Did it come out of the ground or grow on a tree? Then have at it. For example, a sweet potato is an excellent source of healthy carbohydrates. A bag of flavored potato chips, not so much.
Ultimately, if you’re not sure if you should put it in your mouth hole, just reach out to GG for guidance.
